Scintillatron 4096 Review

December 18th, 2018 by

4096 001As the game starts up and you are greeted with the title screen the nostalgic feelings of your youth come flooding back. The sounds, the images, the whole package, it encapsulates what made arcade gaming fun. As I sit there before I even start playing, I already feel like my young 80’s self getting ready to play arcade games on my Atari 2600.

The game has three modes – 1 player, 2 player co-op and 2 players versus. I have only played through 1 player mode. However, if the multiplayer modes are as good as the single player mode there will be many, many hours of fun to be had with this game amongst friends. The only down side of the multiplayer mode is it is limited to local multiplayer, it would be nice to be able to challenge my friends without having them sat next to me, but this is a minor complaint given this is the first full commercial release from kFunction Ltd. This game is an amazing start to their career producing games.

The premise of the game is simple. You control a sprite with the left thumbstick and shoot things with the right thumbstick. The more you can shoot the further you can get in the game. There are combo bonuses to be gained for taking out all of one colour then all of the other. You can also gain sharpshooter bonuses for never missing a shot, or for completing a wave quickly or just before the buzzer.

I found the colours amazing, and coupled with the simple graphics this game is really easy to look at. It is easy to follow the action on the screen with the diverse colour differences between the sprite you control and the sub-atomic particles you have to shoot, the boost tokens are easy to spot (just make sure you actually look at what you are picking up, I accidentally picked up a magnet one and spent the next few seconds screaming as I ran away from the sub-atomic particles, which started to come at me in force).

The music is very reminiscent of the opening credits for Stranger Things and only serves to trigger that transformation into your younger self. There is also a voice that keeps you apprised of things as they happen in the game, it is electronic in nature and fits perfectly in the setting of this game.

Overall this game is highly entertaining and very fun to play. As they say over at kFunction Scintillatron 4096 is:

“A fast paced, high score challenge, your mission is to build the combos and destroy the enemies. A rapid fire shoot ’em up that’s easy to play but difficult to master.” This could not be closer to how I feel about this game if I had written it myself!

A highly addictive retro style game to will keep you occupied for hours. If you have no new games to play this Christmas make this the one to play. If you are a lover of Tron and retro style games you will love this game.
