Parappa The Rapper: Remastered Review

June 21st, 2017 by

I am a review from midlife gamer, this review comes in with nostalgic flavour
I got to review a game that I loved, that’s back from the dead to give us a shove
Parappe the rapper is 20 years old this year, and I can say without trepidation or fear
I played the shit out of it so you might not have to, but you can if you want so hey on with the review

ahem… sorry, Kick punch chop.. AHEM

I got my hands on Parappa Remastered this week, a game I got at launch back in the day and whole heartedly adored. we weren’t wading through a swathe of rhythm games back then, and the button mashing cutesy story of Parappa trying to romance Sunny funny and learning awesome skills with his raps was novel. but how does it hold up now?

Well… it’s in 4K!

Annoyingly the cutscenes are all in a tiny window… however the gameplay visuals … wow! I’m sure they didn’t have to do much to it, but the visuals are crisp and bright, it looked pretty damn good.

for those of you not in the know, Parappa follows our favourite Playstation branded 2D cartoon Dog-thing Parappa as he raps his way to the heart of the girl everyone wants, Sunny Funny. this is done by learning skills in rap from a variety of instructors, an onion man, a frog and a chicken to name a few (yeah, you heard me… Onion man.) As mentioned above this is a rhythm game, and to be honest, the rhythm felt a little off on this. I remember on the original, acing levels and getting the super bonus score freestyle sections… now I’m lucky if I scrape levels… maybe I’m just getting old.

there’s a few neat little touches and things I perhaps don’t remember… or maybe they really are new, Like changing the music on levels, it adds a whole different dimension to the game. one that freshened it up no end. Outside of that its just a much crisper version of the original, and I’m happy with that, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it! I would say the addition of calibration on timings would have been welcome though!

Parappa hit me 20 years ago and he’s still doing the same now, he is no chicken from the kitchen, and I ain’t Kidding

Give this a go, especially if you’ve got kids / a wife who are up for a bit of a gaming laugh!
