Atari 2600 Return

September 3rd, 2017 by

1200px-Atari_Official_2012_Logo.svgTo many of us, the Atari 2600 was one of the first consoles we ever owned, or enviously coveted from our friends and elder relatives (depending on your age). Today Atari and PQube, a developer and publisher with a penchant for retro consoles, have announced that this christmas you will have the chance to own the latest iteration of this coveted console, in either handheld or plug and play form.

Both units come preloaded with 50 classic Atari games, and allow you to relive your childhood with a plethora of recognisable games, whether you want to fire up some centipede, breakout or if you want to destroy your eyes further with the epilepsy inducing Tempest; they are all there for you to enjoy.

While the “home console” version is a faithful recreation of the old Atari single button controller, the handheld has a more refreshing design. Using the original Atari 2600 as a template, the handheld comes with the same wooden facade and a 2.4″ screen on which to enjoy your games on the go. It also includes A/V output, with an HDMI adapter available, and comes equipped with analog stick and dual buttons.

The retro plug and play Joystick featurs an arcade style button atop the recognisable single stick and connects using the included A/V cable or seperately available HDMI adapter. Each of the units will include the following 50 games.

Oh yes a must have for the retro gamer person like myself. I pre-ordered the 2600 retro handheld and i am still over anxious about handheld coming soon. It is designed beautifully with the woody in mind. The compartment for AAA batteries is an excellent idea for me as the unit should last for years. No sealed unit with ion battery. I am using rechargeable batteries for absolute safety. With headphone socket i am hoping for a volume wheel to increase and decrease sound. Haven’t seen this feature advertised so am hoping.
