EVE Online players wage giant space battle

August 12th, 2013 by

eve-logoEve Online recently saw it’s largest ever battle, with over 4,000 players taking part in an epic fight that spanned over 5 hours.

On Sunday 28th July two rival alliances, CFC and Test Alliance, clashed over control of the resources and travel routes within several of the game’s solar systems. When the dust had settled, CFC walked away as the victors.

Erlendur Thorsteinsson, one of Eve Online’s developers, tweeted that 4,070 pilots took part in the galactic war, with servers having to be slowed to 10% of normal so the engine could accurately compute what was going on.

TEST Alliance started the battle using the tactic of jamming the CFC’s targeting capabilities, which in turn cripples the CFC’s ability to heal friendly units.

The balance of the battle was swung however when CFC sent in  a large fleet of the most powerful spacecraft in the game – capital ships. Upon their arrival many test Alliance members ran from the battle, fearing for their vessels. All in all, over 2,900 ships were destroyed.

EVE Online players can purchase in game currency with real world money, and as such there is currently a debate going on as to the total value of destroyed ships, however a smaller battle in early 2013 created an estimated £10,000 of destruction.

This is the second time recent months that EVE Online has created headlines. Early in July one of the largest and most expensiveships in the game, valued at over $9,000, was lured into a trap leading to it’s complete destruction.
