Dead Space, released in October 2008 – which is a lifetime ago in the video-game world, was widely acclaimed and seen as moving the survival horror genre forward in a new direction while the Resident Evil franchise had lost its way. Unleashed to almost unanimous praise in early 2011, the sequel, Dead space 2 was widely seen as Aliens to the first game’s Alien, a more action orientated and bombastic iteration, but still retaining the horror and thrills of the establishing chapter.
The third game in the series, the surprisingly named Dead Space 3, has been receiving some negative buzz, centered perhaps a little unfairly on the increased focus on action-based thrills and spills, a bright, less claustrophobic setting, and the inclusion of drop in, drop out co-op. Is Dead Space 3 in danger of being studio-hijacked and muddled à la Alien 3?
