Funcom’s MMO The Secret World has announced it has gone free to play – in a fashion. Players must still purchase the game initially, but there is now no monthly subscription fee, instead it is optional. Interestingly, there seems to be very few restrictions for non-subscribers, and the benefits for those that do divvy out the monthly cash seem more like boosters than restrictions. These include such benefits as a ‘Time Accelerator’ which increases experience gained by 100% for 1 hour, $10 worth of bonus points, an item-of-the-month gift and 10% off in the in-game store
There are also further enticements on offer such as 30% off on 3, 6 and 12 month Membership plans during December and an Initiate Pack, which includes strong starter weapons, a Blood Raven pet and extra social clothing. Much of this stuff is beneficiary or cosmetic, instead of restrictive and as a former subscriber, I can say that I enjoyed my time with the game. It comes highly recommend and if you see this around for cheap, and you have any inclination towards the genre, this is one of the better ones out there.
Funcom implement some interesting and innovative choices in terms of MMO story, and the variety of missions available is highly involving, including some investigative and detective like mission that have more in common with adventure games. It has an excellent, Lovecraftian-Kingian vibe, with conspiracy theories and myths and legends both ancient and modern woven into its tapestry, creating a setting that is fresher than most. The game also dispenses with conventional classes and allows you create builds on the fly.
The Secret World has been supported with four major updates since it’s June release with a further one this coming month that will be included if you buy the game in December. The game can be picked up for under £25 from a variety of online retailers. I am in no way affiliated with the developers of this game; I just really like it and hope they do well, and I am thinking of diving back in myself.
SWTOR take note.
