BioWare Announces Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut as Free DLC

April 5th, 2012 by

BioWare have announced a free DLC pack coming to Mass Effect 3 called, Extended Cut, which will provide additional cinematic scenes to the game’s controversial endings.

“Through additional cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will give fans seeking further clarity to the ending of Mass Effect 3 deeper insights into how their personal journey concludes,” Says a press release from Electronic Arts.

“With the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut we think we have struck a good balance in delivering the answers players are looking for while maintaining the team’s artistic vision for the end of this story arc in the Mass Effect universe,” Says BioWare co-founder Dr. Ray Muzyka.

Mass Effect 3 Executive Producer, Casey Hudson, added that “we have reprioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player.”

Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut will be released this summer.

I think bioware have made the right choice releasing it for free.

Still to be seen if it gives the right sense of finality…

Read a lot of posts on other sites that have damned this move, suggesting that Bioware’s decision to respond to the protests in this way opens a can of worms for other titles and future games but I just think it shows that they truly care about how gamers percieve their products.
There are always going to be gamers who feel that the ending to any particular game ‘wasn’t the one they would have chosen’ but, in this case, the main problems are down to the fact that most of the events simply don’t make sense and go against the rules and lore of the ME world that Bioware has so lovingly set up over 3 immense games.
The fact that we need DLC to help explain what happened (I assume there’ll be a fair bending of the story to make it fit) means that the ending wasn’t fit for purpose. Totally agree that they shouldn’t do a different ending though. For better or worse, this is the one they decided to roll with and that’s that.
