Ribbon Hero – Word, Powerpoint and Excel Gaming!

March 26th, 2010 by

Now there’s an excuse to play ‘video’ games during work hours!
Microsoft Office Labs have helped create the Ribbon Hero game in a bid to help users get more from their applications.

“Any reasonably complex software faces a question of discoverability,” said Jennifer Michelstein, a program manager at Microsofts Office Labs. “So we asked how can we help users become experts?”

Not wanting to replace the F1 Help or the trusty PaperClip we all detest, the game presents users with game challenges based on features that they might not normally use. There is probably a whole host of functions that remain ‘hidden’ from all but the most expert users.

How many times do you end up helping out some of the less experienced users…over and over again. Ribbon Hero is a fun alternative to expose unfamiliar users with many of the features they may not even know about.

Link this in with Facebook and you’ve got instant Leaderboard Bragging Rights.

The developers are keep to keep the game up to date with regular DLC based on users experience and may even elect to bring Xbox style achievements into the game space.

Adding to the fact that research shows people enjoy this way of learning (through games), Jennifer added, “There’s something powerful about repetition and there’s also something about spreading that over time”.

I’d love to have a go at this, but we’re using Office 2003 Apps at work…
Ribbon Hero is only compatible with Office 2007.
There is a great video explaining this here:

  1. Oh my god, that looks great. I’m going to try and get it at work, I’m sure I’d rack up a few points. Might even see if I can’t get the whole team using it

  2. Wow this is awesome! This is the way all applications should teach it’s users. I’m actually looking forward to using Word now. Great find Adamski. Now can we have something like this for Photoshop please?

That is a really good idea, my wife is trying to learn to use Word, this would be great for her.
