Just following on from a brief chat on twitter…

We've always called our TV remote the 'doofer', as in;

"Oh shit it! Strictly Come on the Ice has just started, where's the fuckin' doofer?"

What's your TV remote called?

I've heard Doofer before, along with zapper and "thingy"

I tend to fall back to "remote"

Called it a Hoofer Doofer when I was younger (blame the Telly Addicts tv show).

Now I call it the magic wand…or that's what I am telling my son it is…not sure why…

Generally referred to as the 'Grrrwheresthefuckingremote'. It usually sits on the arm of the sofa, till it gets knocked off. Just above where there is a bin. Both the TV and Virgin remote are in a landfill site somewhere. I buy replacements, same thing happens.

Ive called it the Firkin for many many years now.  Its not refering to it as a unit of beer, its just coincidence.  It came from living at home, at about the age of 12 i got a BIG TIME bollokking for telling my sister to 'pass the F***ing remote'.  As you do i then broached the phrase in a slightly different way, partially t be clever, though also to avoid further repercussions 'pass the Fuuuuurrkin remote',  always referred to as the firkin since. My wife strangely adopted this phrase, almost a cognitively flooded conditioned response.  Im looking forward to my son also adopting the name and carrying on the legacy into future generations.

Straw poll….

If you were to loose you're remote… would you still be able to perform the basic functions manually.

I think I'd be able to change inputs and volume… but there are no buttons, its one of those bastards which keep turning themselves on and off when your polishing

Hell no, at least two of the devices my Harmony controls have no buttons on them at all.

How does one control an Apple TV without the remote?

I dread the day my remote surcumbs to my continuous efforts to postpone changeing the batteries.  i know i can change the volume, there are 3 other buttons under there, two of which i presume are channels, the third i can only dream as to its function.  It could bethe button to launch all the nukes in North Korea for all i know.  tus i am VERY wary of pressing it, at least untill the nukes are decommisioned.
