Is this still a thing? I've recently been reading comics for the first time. I've read Batman Year One and Batman The Killing Joke. I've got The Dark Knight Returns and Arkham Asylum to read next laugh Would love to read some other comics.

Give Y:The last man and Locke & key, only started reading comics recently. Thanks to currierox for the recommendations.

I've just finished Dark Knight – cracking read. The animated movie is available via the Cartoons HD app for anyone who managed to get that.

I'm now ploughing through Y The Last Man.

February is almost upon us so maybe that would be a good time to re-KINDLE the Comic Book Club?
I might not be able to read the book of the month, but it's a great thread for getting recommendations from others.
If it wasn't for this thread, I wouldn't have every been exposed to The Killing Joke.

I will say that I just got Batman Earth One and it makes for a cracking read. It changes a lot about Batman's origin story, even changing the roles that some of the characters have. I'll say I was really surprised by some of the twists in the story.

Also I just got around to reading Long Halloween and Hush. Both absolutely fantastic stories, though the ending if Hush leaves much to be desired, the story itself was brilliant. Jeph Loeb did a brilliant job on both of these. They are both heavily character driven stories, with a. Lot of twists and turns whilst using some minor villains and using them in pretty unique ways (at least for Long Halloween)

Sorry for the rambling, it's late, but I just wanted to put my 2 cents out there. Definitely read these books if you have the chance. I wasn't disappointed by them at all smile

You are right folks, this has been sadly neglected over the last few months!

I have been swamped with work and so I have had to take a back seat on this, it would be good to set something up to chat about things and produce some cool content for both the main site and the forums.

Does anyone have any ideas about how we can spruce things up a bit?

How about we mix things up with something downright dirty and jacked up.

I propose we read, The Boys.

How about we do a classic 1 month then do something up to date the next? Im pretty up to date with books from image, vertigo, idw & oni so I'd be happy to suggest some of the hot titles that are currently ongoing.

My subscription list is now standing at 37 titles per month and will easily pass 40 when the April solicits are up on comixology.

Ok currierox why don't you kick things off and suggest a comic for this month, I've still got credit on my iTunes so I can download comics.

I like the look of "The Boys" – it stirred up some controversy when it was released…

Its currently at a keen price point on Amazon.co.uk http://goo.gl/zut8ih and a little cheaper on Kindle.

The idea of jumping between a newer and a classic title, from month to month is an interesting one, I find it hard to find new titles and seem to go back to the same old favourites. A fresh look at new ranges would be appreciated.

Well, I at about issue 14 of Y The Last Man.
Now I've got my hands on The Boys (hooked me in withing the first few pages!).

Quick question, is it acceptable to have multiple comics on the go at one time?
I'm only on book 2 of The Walking Dead, so I'm mixing it up a bit.

How many comics have you guys n gals got on the go at any one time?

I'm following about 7 different current series right now.

Curry follows about 25 or 30 I think.
I tend to marathon through older stuff. The Boys took me about 3 weeks to read the entire series.

Took me maybe a month to read all of Y the Last Man. The entire Alan Moore Swamp Thing took a month or so.

I think it's easier to burn through two comics at the same time if their stories are completely different.  I don't think you'll have too much of a problem reading Y the Last Man and The Boys at the same time. But I wouldn't suggest putting Walking Dead into the mix since both Y and WD are post apocalyptic in theme.

I made the mistake of reading the Vertigo version of House of Secrets and The Unwritten at the same time and to this day I have a hard time remembering what happened in which book.

OK, so if we go with the first volume of The Boys, we can discuss it on this thread, on twitter using the hashtag #mlgcomicclub or on facebook/Google+

If anyone is brave enough to record their thoughts on video etc, fire the details through and we can share them with the wider audience.

I highly recommend that you all give Manifest Destiny v1 a go. It's 1 of my favorite ongoing series at the moment.

I'm STILL reading 'Y the Last Man'.
About halfway through. It's been a bit of a journey, but still enjoying it.

I tried 'The Boys', but to be honest, all the 'sexuality' turned me right off it.
Maybe that's the whole point of it… maybe someone can enlighten me?

Yeah, the crassness of The Boys is big part of the fun.

No worries Ad, there's lots of other great books out there that aren't over the top sex and gore humor.

I need to give Manifest Destiny a try.

I kind of passed that one by because I missed the twist reveal when I browsed the preview.

I thought it was just a straightforward Lewis & Clark comic.

Good god I've been away for ages, sorry been away for so long.

How is everyone?

I love "The Boys" (reading it back that's sounds wrong I have no connection to Operation Yew Tree or Rolf Harris) and have just bought the 12th and last TPB of the series, I'll miss it when I'm done, it's the over the top filth and crass humour that drew me towards it, I just liked seeing an alternative take on superheroes, not all sweetness and light.

I've also started collecting the New 52 Batman trades, my favourite so far being The Dark Knight and if any of you get the chance read The Jokers "Death of The Family" crossover event, absolutely brilliant.

Also started fables, wanted to get the back story before I got Wolf Amount Us on Xbone/PS4

I was going to get more at the weekend there but my local Waterstones just had 80% of their comic stock stolen in 1 afternoon, I can see it happening as its hidden away in a dark dingy corner, don't want to frighten off the oldies in the reference section I suppose.

I actually collected The Boys by issue as it was first published, Garth Ennis' run on The Punisher was awesome so I was hoping for more dark humour and some of the old ultra violence, and I wasn't disappointed.

It is crude and over the top with overt sexuality but that's the point, these "super heroes" have the means and ability to do ANYTHING they please so naturally, being human by nature, they ultimately became depraved, over indulgent perverts, much like footballers in real life. "The Boys" are a response to these hedonistic maniacs but ironically seem to enjoy the uber violence they indulge in, some more than others anyway…

The whole thing reminds me of Marshall Law from 20 years ago by, I think, Kev O'Neill and Pete Milligan, which is also worth a look.

Coyote – If you're enjoying the New 52, try Batwoman if you haven't already, it's actually a very good story with well developed characters and thankfully manages to avoid crossing over with the majority of other Bat titled stories.

I have perhaps read about 10 issues of "The Boys" and I like the dark side of the story, with the superheroes effectively being arrogant dicks, as opposed to the bastions of good that they always appear as. Yes, the sexualisation of the story can be a tad OTT at times but I can see the parallels between the behaviour of the supes and how celebrities have been known to act with their fans and groupees. I am going to continue reading it (slowly but surely) and see where the story leads….

On another note, the folks over at Humble Bundle are running another comic book bundle, being made up of books from Dynamite (known for their wide range of styles over the years!)

The top tier is $15 and seems to be well worth the money for all that is being offered up.

I've not read The Boys but I'll definitely be picking it up, it looks like a fascinating read! I've mostly been reading Batman comics lately so I want to get away from that for a bit. After that saying that I do love The New 52, especially The Death of the Family. The Joker is such a compelling character.

Any other good recommendations? I like things dark and gritty but I'm open to suggestions.
