Happy holidays, Nice one with the new child Shat!

Taviana sounds like a good map, next.!

I've tried the Wasteland game type. It seems more soldiery, you feel more powerful with the squads and weapons. Going to play it for a while and see if I can get the hang of it, seems cool.

btw

What's your meat today gents? I'm Turkish.. bit of cranberry o'course.

Hey Tepic,

yes, they have!  Get in touch with one of us privately (through Steam is probably easiest) and we can hook you up.

Inferno–are you still playing DayZ?  I see you online occasionally through Commander, but the Infernos on Steam are never online (but I will have another quick look now).  Feel free to join in by getting in touch–the more the merrier!

Anyway, I'll probably be up for some DayZ this evening, so if you've all digested your turkey and mince pies by now and are bored of the reruns on telly, I''ll be around from 7 or 8 p.m.

[Edit]  What a wally, I missed page 8!

Fronkeypoop I'm sending you a Steam friend request now (from Sable_Aviso).  Most of my friends are DayZ players too.

Inferno, I still can't find you, so get in touch!

Shat–hope everything with the new baby is going OK–congrats!  You must be the busiest man on the planet right now.

See you all later.

Hey Arthur,

Your map might be worth a try.  I'm enjoying a little bit of old-skool Cherno too.

I'm on UK248 atm, with a fully repaired camper van, and a motocross bike hidden over the map that only needs a wheel.  I'd love to score a chopper in Chernarus (which could only be accomplished as a team, in my experience).  So that's my aim for this evening.  Devil's Castle may very well be worth a look.  Just gonna Tweet for everyone else, to see what they want to do.

Hi PilarGore, As the server I'm on is private hive, your probably best off staying on the your server especially as you have plenty of gear. When I die on this server I'll join yours as I have lost my tent and have very little gear to lose by moving.

Hey Beany, I didn't know you were a fellow Midlife gamer. Your offer of a vehicle is very generous although I seem to get killed a lot whilst driving around Chernarus.

No worries Arthur, if the gaz is there I can get to you, and if you are stuck for gear let me know as I have been binning weapons as I have no room for them! I found 2 crashed choppers at north west, and they had 3 weapons each and a load of other gear!

I know another guy called Slate on the server, and I'm sure he will help out too.

Ahhh, happy dayz, just completed a flying tour of Chernarus in the 2 seater heli. Firstly, I headed to the NW airfield and passed between the control tower and the fire station 10m from the ground at full tilt. Then headed to Cherno and flew between the large industrial buildings, flying underneath the bridge that connects them. From there I took in the sights of Electro before heading up the east coast up to the NE airfield. This all took about 15 mins but its my no1 highlight playing DayZ.laugh

Dayz+ needed the expansions re-enabled in the main menu, that's what stumped me. I had turned them off for Wasteland. So I'll be sure to jump on & check + out at some point.   That's if I can keep awake, I've been huffing great tree limbs about all day like a Chernarian logger, is there an emoticon for a nakkered bastad..! good recording there btw

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to let you all know about our server situation.  (Yes, *our* server!)

So, I'm sure you've all heard Ant and Chris on their latest Pile Of Shame podcast–episode 49 (and if not, why not?!)–which means that you'll have heard that on Saturday night we decided to set up our own server.

"Awesome!"  I hear you say.  So how are things with it?

Well, I've bought the first month of a 40-player server, which runs (initially) to the 12th of February.

The issue is with getting it set up, and (unsurprisingly) connected to the hive.  So the server is not yet running (and cannot be found on DayZ Commander), but I am working on it.

(I'm a n00b at this server thing by the way, so please be patient!)

There are many things for me to learn, things to add to the sever admin stuff on the control panel, and some conflicts I have to get over (like Battleye Extended, which makes AII:CO behave oddly through Steam.)  But we're getting there, and we *will* get this server set up.  You're all invited!  Here are some other points to note:

Whitelisting: I am very strongly in favour of having either a whitelist, or a password to join the server.  Whatever we choose (and there is also a *very* small chance that we might make it public) I will let you know both what I choose, and how to join the server.  I think allowing your friends on the server will be cool, to expand the playerbase, so don't think that by whitelisting I will be excluding *all* non-MLG players: I won't be.  We started this because of the annoyance of hacking, which means that, if you have a friend who is cool, he will most likely be allowed to play on the server.  On that note:

PvP will be OK on the server.  I think it would be simply dull to just have all of us gathering supplies and vehicles without any competition or paranoia: that's what makes the game.  So again, a player you may know who might like the chance to compete against us would probably be a valuable addition to the ecosystem of the server.  But let's remember that's it's just a game eh?!

Hacking: we went for this server because we were annoyed with hackers.  The more I look in to it, the more I see that admins have their hands tied quite a bit in how they respond to hackers.  So if the worst does happen, chances are we will just shut down the server temporarily, and roll it back when the attack is over.  This is the fairest way.

Maps:  it looks like Taviana can be added as an update to the whole setup, so yes–I reckon we will be able to have that map!

Admins: I'll be an admin, but I can't be the only one!  I think that Antman and Toxic Buddha, since they were with me when we got this, should also have admin rights, so I will offer it to them first, once the server is up and running.  I think that a fourth admin would be valuable (or more if player numbers justify it), so if anyone has experience here then please feel free to PM me with your credentials.  (Having admined a server before will be an advantage, but I'm new too this too so don't let being new discourage you.)  But we'll cross that bridge when we come to it!

Payment:  I am paying for the server myself, and I will *never* expect anyone else to contribute to server costs to play on our server: it's free to you all!  Let's get the server up and running first, and see how everyone likes it.  After that, if you want to throw in a pound or two to help out, I will be eternally grateful.  But you will *always* be able to play for free, without ever being treated differently.  I'll pay as long as I can, or until no one plays regularly any more.

Get in touch!: let me know what you all think!  Any ideas are welcome, or you can PM me to apply for whitelisting (DayZ username, I think, will be enough.  But I'm not certain yet, so I'll let you know!)  Ideas for maps, other DayZ players, regular meetup days–or even particular vehicles or weapons will all be considered.  *I do not know exactly when the server will be up*, so I'll take it in to consideration, and then we'll work from there.

Take care folks, look forward t hearing from you!

This is fantastic news PilarGore, I will definately contribute to the cost of running the server but as I spend a considerable amount of time away from home (job), I wouldn''t be a suitably candidate for helping run it. Just send me an E-mail with you're address and I'll send you a cheque. smile Have a word with Beany, he is admin on the uk zombie nation server.

Well, I am glad to report that the Balls Deep DayZ Server is up and running as of now!  (Most of the difficulties I had were down to me making incorrect assumptions–or possibly just being an idiot.)  There may still be changes to make, but otherwise everything seems to be all hunky dory.  Just search for 'Balls Deep' in Commander, (or add me as a friend) and you'll find us.

See you soon!

Apologies for (semi) hijacking this thread but I'm dying to get involved with this game but would need a new PC. What budget would I be looking at to be playing to a decent standard? I've been out of the PC game for some time now so the prices for stuff are going right over my head.

I'd be fairly comfortable putting the components together myself.

My Pc box was about  £220 pounds 2 years ago and have just added a £60 gfx card and 2gb of memory (4gb total now) and it runs it fine at average settings unless it gets really busy (could be server) , playing on my own I've never had any problems that were not server side. So any quadcore (mine only has 2) 4 GB memory (maybe more if you have win 7,8 or god forbid vista)  and a decent £100+ gfx card should have no problems I would have thought.

For £500 you can get decent enough kit to run it pretty much maxed out with no problem I would imagine smile.

Hey Munkimatt,

yeah this is an awesome game (I just can't think of it as only a mod!), and definitely needs to be tried.  The 'minimum' specs for AII:CO on Steam are:

  • OS: Windows XP or Windows Vista
  • Processor: Intel Core 2.4 GHz or AMD Dual-Core Athlon 2.5 GHz
  • Memory: 1GB
  • Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 8600GT or ATI Radeon 3650 or faster with Shader Model 3 and 512 MB VRAM
  • DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c
  • Hard Drive: 10 GB free space

and about x2 performance to meet 'recommended'.  So, as Caliburn says, you should be looking at less than £500.  Of course, if you've already got bits lying around it'll probably be even cheaper.  I might even have a 5770 GPU lying around somewhere.  Want me to look around for it?  It'll be full of dust (and 2 years old), but the cost to you would only be postage.  Just PM me!

Hey Bisciut Wolverine,

great to see that you're interested in playing some DayZ.  It really is an awesome experience, and it gets better as more people play.  Here's how to get it up and running, off the top of my head.

1.  If you don't already own it, get Arma II: Combined Ops (Steam is probably easiest) for about £17.  (Combined Ops consists of Arma II and standalone expansion Arma II: Operation Arrowhead.  You must have both games for DayZ to run, and Combined Ops is the easiest way to get them.)

2.  Install and run both games at least once *as an administrator* through Steam.  (This generates all the necessary files and folders for the games to run and the mod to be installed to.  Getting to the home screen on each game is as far as you need to go; maybe use that time to set up your player name and change your look.)

3.  Download DayZ Commander from http://www.dayzcommander.com, and install it.  This program will do everything you need for you (including updates) and is by far the best mod installer.  (You can install it to wherever you like.)

4.  Run Commander.  At the top of the screen on the right, you'll see 'Install/Update'.  Whenever this is yellow, you need to update something!  Click it, and install the latest Arma II patch, and also whichever DayZ maps you want.  Assuming you have space, you might as well just get all the maps (but we're using the Taviana ones at the moment.)

5.  You're ready to play!  Just click 'Servers' on the left hand side of the Commander home screen, refresh, and filter for 'The Balls Deep DayZ Server', which is where we all congregate.

6. You should also make sure to have TeamSpeak 3, so that we can talk to each other!  Send me a friend request on Steam (Sable_Aviso) and we can hook you up.  Also Twitter (PileOGore) gets used for organizing when we're playing.  (Other players' Steam and Twitter handles are probably in this thread too.)

7.  Meet up with us.  Slay zombies.  Pwn n00bs.

See you online!
