So, started Skyrim up again, after giving up on it back in March.  Was shocked to find that I was on the penultimate mission of the main quest! So that will be finished tonight and then I can concentrate on the side quests and mopping up the cheeves!

I started it up last week with that in mind. My plan was to get the main story done this month, and after looking at a FAQ, I'm half way through myself.

It did however take me 8 hours to clear out 2 dungeons, then home to put everything in their correct drawers or containers, made potions with everything I'd picked up, crafted what I could, then to a vendor to sell off everything else.

OK….So I started my YOS challenge 3 days ago.  I decided to wait until I had received my xmas presents to see what my situation was before posting.  I received a PS Vita with Assassins Creed 3: Liberation and $150 cash.  I have decided that the $150 will NOT be used to buy any games despite the gift givers expecting that it would probably be used for that purpose.

I have the following in credits…

  • $30 on iTunes (I am counting iOS games as games so once this is spent I cant buy any more)
  • $40 on PSN
  • $19 on Xbox
  • $0* on Paypal
  • 2000 Nintendo points (I have had these for 2yrs already and doubt I'll use them)
I normally use paypal for steam, indie bundles and GoG.com.  There is some money in that account but I am declaring it off limits for games while I am on this challenge.
I have also decided that I am not going to do trade-ins at games stores or fund purchases from selling games. Screw it…If I am going to do this I may as well do it hard.
I have the following games that will be coming in during the challenge as they have already been paid for…
  • PS+ Games.  (My subscription will run throughout the whole period of the challenge)
  • Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 4: Future Soldier – PS3 (Dispatched)
  • Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning – XBox 360 (Dispatched)
  • Dungeon Hunter: Alliance – PS Vita (Dispatched)
  • Tex Murphy – Project Fedora (Kickstarter project – Due Late 2013)
  • Shadowrun Returns (Kickstarter project – Due late 2013)
  • The Banner Saga (Kickstarter project – Due late 2013)
  • Wasteland 2  (Kickstarter project – Due late 2013)
So…Thats where I stand.  PS+, my existing credits and (Possibly) a few kickstarter projects I backed 6mths ago…If they dont get pushed back.

Well fella, welcome to the challenge. You're probably panicking a little right now and thinking 'how the hell am I going to get through this', however like quitting smoking, it gets easier over time.

I looks like you've got a lot to be getting on with already, especially with PS+ as well, so I think you might be in for a easyish run.

Anyway, good luck, and if you start feeling weak, you know where we are smile

So…I'm a little over a month into my challenge and so far so good.  I managed to complete 2 games and have used up $5 of my iTunes credit on a couple of games.  The games I completed were Mutant Blobs Attack and Jetpack Joyride. Both on Vita.

I have also picked up a couple of games that had been dispatched from the UK (I live in Australia) and had not arrived before I started the challenge so they were already factored in.

Only 11mths to go!

Ok, I have a dilemma. I'm currently playing Saints Row the Third and absolutely loving it, I was going to drop on the DLC (as I have the M$ points), but when I worked it out, it was going to cost around 3500 points to get the lot.

However, at my local Tesco, they are selling the Full Package for £22.

So here's the dilemma, do I use up all my points buying the DLC at a ridiculous price, or do I spend cold hard cash buying the Full Package, and stick my copy on fleabay?….I know what common sense is saying, but this kinda breaks the rules?

I'd stick with common sense, but I also understand the urge to just sit on my arse, and pay more money to download the DLC.

Here's a new way of looking at it. Get the full package, and take your old game and Play It Forward.

That's when you play a game and then give it to someone else on the condition the give it away when they stop playing it. The gift that keeps on giving.

@D5120 Technically you're only breaking your own personal stipulations for the challenge not the main rules. You're entitled to 1 joker so SR3rd would be yours. If you was to use your eBay winnings to pay for it would that not technically be you using your games and blu rays as trade?

Ok, I hear what you're saying, man up, stop being weak, and just play the main Saints Row game. If once completed I enjoy it enough to drop on the DLC, the spend the M$ points on it wink

Oh dear had a real blond/senile moment this week started Bio Shock to get it of the pile, it was not until I was almost at the end before I though this is a little familiar checked trophies realised I’d completed ages ago.

I have to admit I may a fallen of the wagon slightly. It’s not all of my own doing the PS3 Widow had some involvement. Even though she has always said it would be a cold day in hell before she bought me anything gaming related she surprised me this birthday by giving me an Xbox. So even though I have cleared L.A. Noire of the list I did purchase Skyrim again just for the DLC as I given up with PSN showing it out here. So I have not technically added to the pile in my eyes anyway.

Well, confession time…. due to a fairly recent change in my circumstances (illness) which has left me with more time on my hands than normal, I've decided to relax my personal rules for the challenge a little and allow myself the wee luxury of buying the occasional new iOS game again.

I'll still be remaining faithful to the rest of the challenge for my console games (with a wild card still intact!), but please feel free to post your derision! wink

It must be the influence of the new Pope because I may have also purchased a couple of IOS games but in my defence I don't count them.

Although I'm not taking part in the challenge, it has made me reflect on my buying habits. I now make more of an effort to finish the games I buy before purchasing new ones. I'm also far more realistic about how much gaming time I have and, therefore, it's very unlikely that I'll buy any game with a single player campaign clocking in at over 20 hours (ruling out pretty much every RPG in the process). I just don't have the time. frown

Last year, I pumped over 100 hours into Skyrim over a 4 month period, but played nothing else during this time, still bought new games and my POS grew larger than ever.

Guys, it's with a heavy heart that I've decided to pull out out the Year of Shame challenge…

Basically I was diagnosed with cancer earlier in the year and have been in and out of hospital a fair bit during the last month with the start of my chemo and the various issues that brings. While I'll still be quite unlikely to be buying many new games, a chance to pick up some new handheld games to pass the time is too good for me to miss.

Not looking for a sympathy vote, but hopefully you'll understand my reasons and not give me too much abuse for it! wink

I'm proud to have lasted this long and will still be a keen listener to the podcast!

I'll 4th it. But at this stage it seems to be in universal agreement.

As for dropping out of the challenge…Completely understandable.  If I was spending that much time in hospital I'd want some new games to play while I was in there too.  I've spent enough time with my wife in hospital & waiting rooms (She suffers from epilepsy) to know how mindnumbingly boring those places can be. Game on!

So…now you're on the hunt for some new titles, is there anything that's tickled your fancy of late? You could slap up a new thread if you're looking for some ideas from the community…and stay frosty.

Just doing a quick head count, who's still in the challenge?

I know HoYooYaDafty dropped out (Hope you're on the mend fella smile), adyhd has dropped this evening (fair play to you fella, you've made it a good chunk of the way through)

I'm still going very strong (I'm a martyr according to Jayce), Si, Foxhounder and Jayce, are still ……going.

Digi replied on twitter saying he's still in, and I know DarnRagnar started his own challenge at the beginning of the year.

So hands up, who's still in, and who's been listening to Jayce and decided to #FuckYOS ?

edit: DrunkRogue is still in smile

Just found the original list…the ones in Red are out of the challenge as far as I know.
