So, numerous discussions have gone on on twitter about everybody's pile of shame, and we seem to have come to a consensus.

To help reduce the pile of shame, the below action will be taken in 2013

No new games 'bought' in 2013.

There are however some exclusion….if you need to get your new game fix, using a rental company is fine.

If you are bought a game as a present, this is also fine, as is buying a game with vouchers, or with trade in credit. Now I understand there are soooooo many loop hole, eg buying vouchers, and then buying games with said vouchers, but the assumption is we're all going to be good.

So who's with me on attempting the 2013 'Pile of Shame' Challenge ?

No way. There are loads of game I want to start and not finish! Hang on, does the POS constitute completely unplayed games, barely played games, or games you've just given up on?

Isn't this what summer is for? I mean now is the perfect time to whittle down your lists, its what I'm trying to do (damn steam sale!!). there's a few podcasts that have been doing this recently, gamebursts Gaming tapas is a similar idea, instead of not buying titles, set yourselves goals in your POS games etc.

Early 2013 is jam packed with goodies like Bioshock Infinite ,Tomb Raider, Colonial Marines & possibly GTA V. However theres nothing pencilled in for after march, so perhaps then is a good bet while the wait for the next gen release at xmas.

I can't see enough people holding off on the final big games of a generation

Agreed with you both, however, using a rental company is fine for the new titles.

My understanding of the pile of shame is the games you have the are anything but completed

It can be any of those, personally I regard mine as games I've not finished, I've started recording my completed games of 2012 which motivates me more to finish games now, although my rental service & reviews isn't helping me lol, plus this Steam sale

I had planned on spending a few long summer evenings sat in the beer garden of the local. Unfortunately the rain keeps filling up my pint glass quicker than I can drink it. Best stay indoors with the xbox then.

I think I'd need til around 2015 to exhaust my current pile of shame!

I also fear the games industry may collapse if I stop buying all these games I'll never play…

As the one to blame for this challenge starting I guess I better throw my hat into the ring.

This all started because the good lady pointed out I was buying games and not finishing what I have – We've all heard that argument I guess. She reckoned that I couldn't go a year without buying a game.

As such I made a pact that I would not personally purchase any games in 2012.

The rules are simple.  I'm not allowed  to buy a game (new or preowned) for money in 2012.

Someone buying a game for me is allowed

Purchasing games on PSN/XBLA using points I already have is allowed.  The purchasing of new points by me is not , people can buy me points as a gift (Birthday/Xmas/Easter and suchlike).

Using store credit/trade-in space buck to buy a new game is allowed as long as I don't add any money to the space bucks in order to complete a purchase

Trading in games to increase the current space bucks value is allowed.

Lovefilm and boomerang are your friends and you are allowed to rent.

I am over half way through now and I have yet to purchase a game this year but silly season will be testing.

Now the rules of the pile of shame, as I understand them.

Any game that is still sealed is part of your POS

Any game where you have not completed the main campaign is part of your POS (this can be defined by seeing the end credits).  A grey area in this is never ending sports games such as FIFA. Thoughts anyone?

Cheevos/Trophies do not count as completion and as such you do not need to platinum or 1k a game to deem it as complete – I am not that sadistic (I have 2 gears games in my pos).

I think thats about it.  Oh yeah Pile of shame list incoming shortly

Holy shit, I've only completed about 5 games in my life.  By that definition my POS now numbers over a hundred and spans back to the Amiga in my loft!

It was late when I wrote that.

It should have been any game where you haven't finished the main campaign and you still own and is not stored in a lift etc is in your POS.

I don't wanna be taking in my lift for consoles etc

As more of a PC Gamer I dont really subscribe to the whole pile of shame ting.

I have a 360, 3DS and PS3 but purchases for those are rare and always somthing I want because its not on PC so always gets played through straight away. Every game that I have not yet got around to playing properly is on Steam, at a quick look theres perhaps 50 or so I have yet to play smile

But it feels completely different.  With consoles theres the ever present presure of seeing your initial cash investment dwindling as the games sat in their wrappers get older and the temptation of trading them in to get a new release whilst they are still worth somthing is ever prsent.  Assuming Steam doesnt implode though, my PC games are all there forever and I have the rest of my life to play them. Theres no temptation to sell or trade them because I cant and because its Steam they cost half the price of their console counterparts anyway so I dont get that sinking feeling of buying somthing day one, leaving it unplayed and then walking in game a month later and seeing it half price. The Steam Sales help on this front as well with absolutely ridiculous prices for AAA titles.

I guess in summary, Im not ashamed of the increasing number of games I have yet to play because I don't feel the same pressure of leaving PC games unplayed that I would with console equivilents.thumbs-up

While I can completely understand the attraction to a laptop you get more for your quid in a desktop system.  Also, it may seem like science but the truth is any dolt can build a pc.

What is the criteria by which a game ends up on the pile of shame?  Simply unfinished or not enough time into it to justify the original expense?

I'm about to walk away from Diablo III having not finished inferno level because the gameplay is so thin and just isn't worth the struggle imo.  Is Diablo III on my pile of shame?

For me, the PoS game is the one that you have on your shelf and that, when you look at it, think 'I haven't done that game justice'. I've a lot of games that I never quite got to end of but felt that I'd had enough so I don't class them as PoS games – it's probably different for every gamer though.

I've read a lot of interesting and varied views on this thread; it's clear that this challenge is not for everyone.  Just for those, like me, who are actually feeling a little stressed out by the number of quality games sitting unloved on their shelves.  Like many in the community, I don't get a lot of gaming time due to family / job commitments so I need to get real – however lovely and shiny the new games coming are, I'm never going to be able to play them all when they come out even if I can afford them all (not forgetting all the great games already out that I haven't put enough hours into).

I need to adapt my gaming style to fit my life better so going back and just enjoying the games (rather than rushing to fit them into limited gaming time) is the only way forward for me.

Recently taken foot off the pedal, gone back and started playing AC series through to completion (only managed around 20% completion of each title so far – how stupid is that?!) and catching up with all the Fallout DLC that I never quite got round to.  Add to that some community nights revisiting classics like KZ and Burnout and I'm really enjoying my gaming again.

I'll still look forward to the odd new release (I soooo want to play BS Infinite and Ni No Kuni) but if I cherrypick what I want then I can cover them via birthday / rental and get to the other titles a little later when I can give them the time they deserve.

I have Gordon Freeman as my avatar and I still haven't finished all of the Half-Life 2 episodes (hangs head in shame).

The great thing is, even if I can't play all the new titles, I can still read about them and the community's experience of them on this rather fabulous site.  The Dragon's Dogma thread has been v interesting and I've only played the demo!

Count me in for this – I'll need some support though.  Getting the cold sweats already…. surprised.

Mage has hit it spot on. I have games that are completed but I feel I need to do it again on the hardest difficulty. That and my penchant for collectibles means I often find myself piling a massive bunch of hours into some games. If i can calm both those aspects down, I should be able to whittle down the PoS fairly quickly. It helps that I only concern myself with one console too.

I'm at the point where I think i can hit this challenge within certain parameters (those being Halo 4 and Borderlands 2).

Funnily enough I came on to the forum this morning to discuss this very thing – its good, and a relief, to know that there are others like me who cant resist a bargain, and it either sits on the shelf gathering dust for that "special day" or it causes all of the other games to take a back seat.

I'm with the guys and girls who take part in this challenge (i feel we should have some t-shirts made!) and if you want a laugh, I literally just finished Gears of War (the first!!) this morning as it had been bugging me that i had to finish it before playing GOW2 and GOW3 and in relation to the latter, I was missing out on the Gears and Beers nights!!

Like yourself, I'm actually playing through the DLC of Fallout 3 and really enjoying it. Granted it's starting to look a little dated, but still some enjoyable gameplay. I guess this was one of the reasons that I thought what Si Stevens was doing this year was a cracking idea. I currently feel under pressure to complete previous games in a series before the new one comes out. An example of this is the Assassin Creed series, the Gears of War series, Halo series, and I feel myself rushing through a game just so it can be marked as 'done' and not giving it the time the game deserves.

With the likes of the steam sale, I've also now added another 10 titles to my virtual pile of shame, which even though they aren't sitting on a shelf staring me in the face, they are sat in the left hand list on the steam client everytime my mac starts. Some of the games are real time sinks, eg Civ5, GTA3, GTAconfusedA, GTA:VC.

I've always joked that I need a year off buying games so I can get through my pile of shame, and apart from the obvious cost advantage, it might also make me appreciate games more, not get annoyed when I'm stuck on a hard bit, as it's stopping me from marking a game as done.

Maybe what will come out of this will be a different mindset, if when I get to the end of 2013, I can simply go back and play some of the games I really wanted to play, and not just games that are over hyped.

This time of year is great for catching up on my pile of shame, but unfortuantly I have used it replaying old games i've enjoyed and even though I have finished about 30 games this year so far not that many of them have been pile of shame games.

this is never going to happen. there are so many sexy games coming out in 2013. would it not be better to keep 2 you REALLY want to play then bring the rest along to eurogamer. you can all go off together to the woods (not for dogging) and make a massive pile of shame fire where everyone hangs thier heads while it goes up in flames and you say a little prayer for all the unplayed games and then make a pledge not to waste money that could have been better spent on sausages

LMAO! We'll keep that as option b wink

I think it's doable, it's going to be a challenge with some of the sexy games coming out, however the main rule is 'We can't hand over cold, hard cash for a game'…..however it does mean we can trade in and use that for new games.

Personally I've never traded a game in, as it just pains me the minimum price they offer, so it'll be interesting to see if I break because I want something new and shiny.

We've also keeping the rental option (I have however dropped down to the £3.99 (1 game per month) package at boomerang rental, so I'll have to delve into the pile if I want to get my game on.

Overall, I think it'll be an interesting experience, and if at the end of it, we make a dent in out Pile of shame…then that can only be a good thing smile

All good and valid points being made here for and against the idea but, for me, it's a financial thing too.  Less games on my PoS = more money in my bank account.

Like D5120, I've got my rental thang going on (Asura's Wrath at the mo – 'I AM SO ANGRY!!!' ) and I plan to trade where necessary and when the trade-in offers are on in shops and online (i.e. Amazon).

I'm also going to box clever and ask for gift cards / money at Christmas so I'll have a few funds to dip for those 'must have' games that might make me fall off the wagon (looking at you, Bioshock Infinite).

To be honest, with my PoS games, rentals and the odd new game I'll have more than enough to fill my limited gaming time.

I'm still up for this!

The fact that I have RDR, Oblivion, Skyrim, GTA3, GTAconfusedA, GTA:VC, GTA4 in my pile, and also have OCD (must do every side mission), I think I'm good for a few years smile
