Its almost December, and once again we  approach the end of another gaming……hang on a minute; we're still in October.

That's right. With the flame gently flickering away from the current generation before it, once again, rises into something all new, powerful and shiny. We at Midlife Gamer felt that there was no better time to have a fond look back on both the gaming year and a generation that inspired many. There have been a lot of big games, a lot of disappointing games, and a lot of surprising games that have arrived in our machines of choice in the last 12 months, and here at Midlife Gamer we want you to decide, as a community, which game truly shone as the gems of both 2013 and the generation.

Once again, rather than setting out contenders for specific categories, such as best FPS or best Soundtrack, that we see year in year out across many gaming sites, we have decided to continue with the approach we took last year.

There will be no lists of preselected games. There will be no contenders, other than those you yourself put forward. That's right, you will choose who wins directly.

So, how does it work?

Simply put, we need you to rank your favourite games of the year – up to a maximum of five – and send them to us, and if you wish a couple of lines as to why. Alongside that, we will allow one selection for our Stinker award, the game that in your opinion was truly not worth the disk it was burned on, or the hard-drive space it filled.

Only fully released titles qualify, and as such any Alpha/Beta code you may have selected will go in the honourable mention list along with those titles that don't quite break into the top 10.

You can place a vote for a game from any genre or format. I cannot stress this enough. If your favourite game of 2012 was that Farming Simulator you download for your iPhone then vote for it. In the Midlife Gamer Community Awards it has as much chance of winning Game of the Year as your Bioshocks and Grand Theft Autos.

The game must have been released between 1st December 2012 and 7th November 2013.

Once the votes have been cast, we will assemble the staff to count the tally to see the ultimate winner. Each position between first and fifth will be allotted a point score as follows: 10 points for first, eight points for second, five points for third, three points for fourth, two points for fifth place and finally minus one point for your stinker nomination.

As we approaching the end of the generation there are an additional two awards to place a single nomination for, which are:

  • Game of the Generation – Which games have you enjoyed the most in this generation. Maybe it was the story that grabbed you, maybe it achieved something just a little different or maybe it was just good old fashioned fun. Whatever it was, we want to know. Vote for your top 3 in order.
  • Most Anticipated – What game of the next 12 months are you most looking forward to? It's this category that you tell us

Once the order is set, we will be updating the site on a daily basis with a countdown to the Midlife Gamer community Game of the Year.

Voting closes at 23:59 on the 11th November 2013 and is open to all as of now.

So, time to get your thinking caps on, and submit your votes in one of four ways. You can:

  • Place your votes in the comments of this article
  • Place your votes in the Community Awards 2013 forum post here
  • PM Simon Stevens through the forum with your choices
  • or finally email your selections to

Happy voting!!

Solm – The game must have been released between 1st December 2012 and 7th November 2013. This would rule out Borderlands and Bioshock unless those numbers were typos.

Before i reveal my nominations i would like to give an honourable mention to Bioshock Infinite, tho i had high hopes for the game pre-launch, ultimately it fell flat in my opinion. Ok here goes:

1) Diablo 3)   Surprisingly fantastic console port which i sank far more hours into than i thought i ever would and teaming up with friends for Inferno mode it just stupidly fun.

2)Tomb Raider)  Didnt hold up much hope for this franchise reboot but was absolutely blown away by pretty much everything the game had to offer. Fantastic graphics, good story and great exploration combined with a pretty fun little MP mode made this my surprise hit of 2013.

3)Call of Juarez:Gunslinger: Yet another game i wasnt expecting much from but had a blast playing thru. Great controls, great cell-shaded graphics, good story telling with a subtle dark sense of humour and buckets of replayability. Definitly the best XBLA game of 2013 IMO.

4)GTAV:Tho a very beautiful game with superbly written characters and a decent story, in the end i just didnt have nearly as much fun with it as the other games on the list.

5)The Legend of Zelda; Windwaker HD:Absolutely stunning to look at and great fun with some minor tweaks that really improve the game over the original. A must-buy for any WiiU owner.

Stinker of the year) The Walking Dead;Survival Instinct:An absolute dogturd of a game. After Telltale games fantastic point n click adventure i was looking forward to some great first person zombie killing action but what i got was a shockingly awful game with broken controls, broken AI and graphics that would of been barely acceptable on the PS2. Avoid at all costs.

Games of the generation:

1) Fallout 3: A huge open-world to explore with literally thousands of locations, memorable characters, fun combat and a great perk system. I loved absolutely everything about this game and after spending well over 250 hours on both the 360 and PS3 versions, there is no game this generation for me that even comes close.

2) Mass Effect Trilogy: Ok bit of a cheeky one here because obviously its 3 games but i like to think of ME as one long game split into 3 parts rather than actual sequels. Brilliant storytelling, a huge universe full of wonderful and diverse characters and most of all its one of the very few games this generation that made me actualy care about the protagonists. N.B: If using the trilogy as 1 nomination isnt allowed then i put forward ME3 as my second game of the gen.

3) Call of Duty Modern Warfare: Tho alot of smack gets talked about the cod series nowadays, the first Modern Warfare i really think was an innovative and just outright fun game. Pre MW1 my gaming was strictly solo but this game got me out there playing with real life people, got me into a clan and fimly established my belief that online MP was the way forward. Not only did i put hundreds of hours into this game but along the way i met many people online who i am now friends with in real life.

Most anticipated:  Destiny

Here you go…

1) Beyond 2 Souls

2) Tomb Raider

3) GTA V

4) The Last of Us

5) Persona 4 Golden

Honourable mentions go to Animal Crossing: New Leaf and Ni No Kuni.

Stinker: Aliens : Colonial Marines, no doubt about it.

Games of this Gen:

1) Fallout 3, for all the reasons Diablos79 has already mentioned.

2) Deadly Premonition – for all its off kilter wonderfulness and weirdness, put the awful mechanics aside and you have a set up and story quite unique to this generation (albeit nicked wholesale out of Twin Peaks).

3) Walking Dead Season 1 - I'm a sucker for a story in my games and this drew me and didn't let go. Had my initial doubts as I am a keen reader of the comic book but the TV series never really grabbed me. Ok, the gameplay is 'limited' but I was thinking about every decision, agonising over every action and its possible consequences.  Closest I'll ever get to being in a blockbuster film and THAT ending will always have me in tears (big girl's blouse that I am).

If I'd have been able to go to 5, then Mass Effect 2 and Heavy Rain would have made it in too smile

Most anticipated:  Dragon Age 3

Game of the year….

1) Tomb Raider, Was so looking forward to this game and for a change I wasn't disappointed smile

2) The Walking Dead, amazing game that had me really thinking about everything I did.

3) Saints Row 4, Just great fun

4) Brothers, a wonderful little game

5) Defiance, almost made it as my stinker as well

Stinker of the year…. Bit of a tough one, but I'm going for Aliens: Colonial Marines but just because I was so looking forward to it frown

Game of this Generation, I was going to say Forza Horizon as I had so much fun with this game. But my vote is going with Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine for the simple fact me and the young lad had such a blast with this game.

Most Anticipated Game: TITANFALL, so looking forward to this and I hope I'm not disappointed

OK here's mine:

No 1: Killzone Mercenary (currently best game on Vita IMO)
No 2: GTA V (great improvement over previous versions)
No 3: Gears of War: Judgement (looking back I wish I joined in the community nights)
No 4: Castle Clash (1st go-to Android mobile game)
No 5: Temple Run 2 (2nd go-to Android mobile game)

Its apparent from trying to list 5 above that I have been spending far too much time playing COD: Black Ops 2 and even double dipping on it as well. So I've missed out on some other great releases and some obvious stinker contenders. No doubt it'll be the same story for me when KZ4 and COD:Ghosts come out.

Stinker of the Year: Dust 514 – Well I know this is F2P so I shouldn't complain right? I just felt that everything was against me unless I caved in and spent some pennies on the micro-transactions. I tried playing this with friends and unless we were all doing something stupidly wrong, we couldn't even talk to each other unless we paid for that functionality. Hardcore players that obviously spent a bit had better weapons, armour and special vehicle drops, which made the game-play unfair.

Games of the Generation:
1) Killzone Mercenary (incredible quality for handheld device)
2) GTA V (great single player campaign and endless online fun)
3) COD: Black Ops 2 (I know not everybody agrees but it certainly got me hooked)

Most Anticipated: Killzone Shadow Fall – I'm still enjoying the community evenings with KZ3 so have high hopes for KZ4, please don't let me down!

I figured this would be relatively easy, but after investigation in to the release dates of the games on my original list it turned out to be rather a challenge, clearly I need to play more new releases…here goes

1 – Tomb Raider – 360 – possibly like others I didn't really hold out much hope for this and to be honest the release date passed me by a little unnoticed, how wrong I was. Compelling game play and the storyline made me play this game through a few times, even spent the extra few hours getting to 100% finding all the hidden items 9/10

2 – Badland – iOS – a fantastic game, very atmospheric and in places really challenging, invested a good amount of hours into this and with continued updates the £2.49 price tag is a bargain 9/10

3 – F1 2013 – 360 – the last recent F1 games have impressed me with their graphics and this one didn't let me down. Only recently released i love it already. Full race weekends with Practise and Qualifying what more could any F1 fan want, can see myself enjoying this for many weeks to come 9/10

4 – The Last of Us – PS3 – Naughty Dog unleashed a real stunner here, a nice fun mix of stealth, exploration and adventure with a nice storyline but unfortunately some frustrating control issues and auto save in places made me have to turn it off  and come back to it later, still very good 8.5/10

5 – Splinter Cell BlackList – 360 and PS3 – First thing i need to say between the two console versions is how shockingly bad the graphics were on the PS3 I honestly thought there was a problem with my TV. I only ever played the PS3 version on co-op a few times, not too bad but got bored of the repetitive nature of the "wave" missions. Single player on the 360 was good, got exactly what I expected from a Splinter Cell game with the added extras of in game upgrades 8.5/10

StinkerThe Bureau XCOM Declassified – pretty sure they released the unfinished version, expected a lot more

Game of the Generation – Uncharted 2 – set a bench mark for many years to come, still don't think it has been rivalled

Most anticipated – WatchDogs

Myself and Digi have been talking and we have decided to make a slight nomination rule change for one of the awards.

This change will only affect the game of the generation.

We would like you to nominate your top 3 games of the generation. These will then be giving a points score much in the same way as the goty award already does.

So your number 1 pick will get 10 points, number 2 = 5 points and third = 2 points

Again I cannot stress that this change is only for the game of the generation category.  This will need people to revisit their game of the generation nomination only

This is always really tough for me because i don't play that many new games so this year i have a top 2 because thats all i have played which fits in the rules

1. The last of Us

2. Remember Me

So the games of the Generation is something i can at least rank in a top 3

1. Mass effect 2

2. The Last of Us

3. Assassin's Creed 2

The first two games in my generation was list were easy choises but i was conflicted between Assassin's Creed 2, batman arkham asylum and fallout 3. But for me Assassin's Creed 2 just takes it for me.

Games of the year 2013:

1. Bioshock Infinite

No game in the past year has had such a deep effect on  me. It was met with such high adulation, that the inevitable backlash was enough to drown out the initial praise. But that praise should still stand. Infinite still has the best opening hour of any game ever, and an ending that is both satisfying in it’s finality, yet thought-provoking enough to cause debate, and meaningful introspection. In between, the player is treated to some fabulous set pieces, and some of the most criminally under-rated combat this generation. It may not reach the speed and fluidity of Call of Duty, or the weight and heft of Gears, but it offers open ended environments, huge weaponry choice and speedy maneuverability.

2. State of Decay

Where did this come from?

3. Gone Home

Much has been made this past year of the state of narrative in videogames. Gone Home tackled the subject of narrative and the question of whether games are art in one hugely confident and succinct package.

4. Grand Theft Auto Five

It was always going to be a contender. Not only is Grand Theft Auto 5 a perfection of the formula, it is a fitting swansong to the generation.

5. DOTA 2

I’ve played this phenomenon for less time than I would like, and less time than is fair to judge, but I feel that I know enough to know this is a game so mechanically perfect, and so impeccably crafted, that even when not actively engaged with it, you know, playing it, one tends to think about it. It is a game that will still be talked about in five years time or more, and for that, it deserves a place on this list. Oh, its a MOBA…

Special mention, lest we forget:

DMC: Devil May Cry

Released in the first month of a huge year, DMC overcame a huge sense of fan backlash to deliver a superlative action adventure hack and slash that moved at an almighty pace, offered a wonderful sense of replayability, and confirmed Ninja Theory as one of the most inventive developers around. Shame no-one will remember it.

Sim City: Considering that Aliens: Colonial Marines is a dead cert for this award, I’d thought I’d make sure this mess got a dishonourable mention. Glacial to engage with, broken in both design and execution, dysfunctional, user-unfriendly, punitive, and a waste of the player’s time; the sad thing is there is a very absorbing game here at it’s very core, if the player was just allowed to play it.

Indie game:

Gone Home: see above
