Anybody else picked this up?

It's bascially a turn based strategy game which has a lot in common with XCom.  Especially the levelling up characters trait and permadeath.  These have been part of the Fire Emblem experience since day one, but they've added a new system based on the relationships that develop between the characters out on the battlefield.  It's amazing.  I've kept most of the main characters alive so far, and have just been letting the 'newbies' fall in battle, but I've just read that one of the first characters that you can pick up is amazing if you can keep him alive long enough.  I'm going to bin my current ten hour save game and start again!  What with all the DLC available at the moment, this game could keep me going for a very long time.

It looks stunning as well.  The cutscenes are fantastic in 3D.  That tech still blows me away.

What with this and Monster Hunter, I've put some serious time into my 3DS recently.  I've been downloading the games digitally as well.  Paid slightly more for them but no messing about with cartridges.

Nintendo are running a promotion at the moment.  Buy three games from the list of eight, and get one free, so I think I'll be claiming that soon. thumbs-up

How hard is it? I have dissidia something-or-other on the Vita & couldn't get on with (doood etc) and it was really complex (too much for my aging brain to take). I do like Xcom though… That's coming to iOS soon apparently smile

Never played Dissidia, but if you liked XCom then I'd say give Fire Emblem a try, but it's obviously more swords and magic as opposed to sci-fi tech.  There's a free demo on the e-shop at the moment.

Like most good games, it seems fairly simple on the surface, but there are some incredibly complex mechanics hidden just below the surface.  You can turn the permadeath off as well, but I'm thinking that it may affect the characters development and relationships that are built within the group.

I started my second game last night, trying to get everyone levelling up at the same time, and getting some early partnerships going.  I love it. smile

Yep, it's the first two or three missions (sort of) from the game, with all the cutscenes, so you get a fair impression of the game and story.

I've just found out that characters can eventually get married and have kids!thumbs-up

Trying to keep everyone alive is hard as well.  One little mistake, or an oversight on my part and I have to start the mission again.  No big deal though.  It's fun trying to perfect the play through, or swap out characters and try again.

There's no 'broken' mechanics like XCom though.  No-one will manage to take you out from the other side of the map time and time again. Ranged players like archers and mages will attack you from one 'tile' away, and the rest is melee combat in which the character has to be standing next to you.

Simple?

Not quite! wink

Lol. That's what I did! smile

I've got MH and FE downloaded on the card, with Resident Evil Revelations sitting in the cartridge slot.  Great game.  Really enjoying that.  Got at least six months of quality game time sitting in my pocket.

Let me know how you get on with the game.  I have so many questions about all the different systems at work within the game, and no-one to ask!  I've gained a few insights from reading bits online, but I can't find anything substantial.

Like this scenario.  I am trying to level up my characters evenly…as much as possible, and using them in pairs which I feel are good match ups, but I'm not having them 'pair up' on the same tile, as the secondary character in that system doesn't seem to benefit.  There may be advantages to doing that, but I can't see what it is, other than using a horse based character to carry another character further in one turn than he normally would be able to travel, especially the heavily armoured dudes but that's not the scenario…this is!

On most games, you can take on side quests and other missions on the periphery, to level up characters and become perhaps overpowered in the main quest.  This doesn't seem to happen.  Whichever quest I take on, it gets increasingly more difficult.  I think I'll be able to breeze through a 'minor' quest that I don't actually have to do to get some more experience into my party, and I get completely wiped out.

Therefore, I'm wondering if the game has set rules for it's missions and quests, or whether they all scale to be a challenge to your party.

I did notice that my second play through of the game, to get back to where I am now, took me a lot less time.  Perhaps it's just a case of learning the strategies to deal with the adversaries with the characters I'm using?

Let me know your thoughts.

Regardless to any of that, it's a bloody great game. thumbs-up

Yeah, all the characters can pair up and share the same tile.  I think this builds relationships in the same way as having them standing on adjacent tiles, or it may even build stronger relationships faster.  It's just that I don't think you get the same XP share if you're on the same tile.  There's always one main character and one secondary.  It does help keep the weaker ones protected though.  You always get the same stat boosts with adjacent characters though.  It's amazing to see the relationships grow and how much better they get fighting together and helping each other out.

I've used it if there's only one 'safe' tile out of reach of the enemy.  I'll squeeze the two characters on it and they're both safe! thumbs-up

I tried my first side quest today and am glad I have perma-death turned off. It was a raid on a bandit camp & they wiped out half of my team (I did win in the end, Fred is amazing!). I haven't really played around with pairing the characters up yet but will for my next battle (the one to get help from the guys up north). I think I'll stick my healer with someone to protect her, and my fire mage chicky with someone too and see how that goes.

Yeah, most side quests in other games are usually just a way of ramping up the experience of your team quite easily before taking on the proper quest.  This game just kicked me in the b*lls the first time I tried a side quest.

I'm playing on hard with permadeath on and I don't think I've seen the bandit camp quest.  How many missions are you in?  I've played for 18 hours and am on about mission five I think, although I did completely start the game again at about hour ten.

I've never heard of Fred either! smile

Have you tried the mission with bandits attacking the village that Anna is trying to defend?  That's the furthest I got on my first playthrough.  I couldn't get help to her before she, or one of my other characters died.

I was trying to pair up a character with Sumia on her Pegasus and get them flying over to the village to help Anna but Sumia is weak against the archers that are in the forests, so it just wasn't working.  Then I was trying to get all the characters on horseback to rush over to her, but it's just too risky sending people in without proper support, and with the dense woodland causing movement penalties I just had to take a step back from it.

Are you playing on hard or normal?

The AI on hard always targets the weakest member of my party first.  It makes levelling up newer characters a real challenge!

Doh.

Of course I know who Frederick is!!! rofl

I want to pair up with Lissa eventually, I just need to get a bit more experience to be able to look after her properly by myself, although seeing Anna in action recently, I may have to give her a go!

I've set Miriel up with Lon'qu.  I feel the range and the melee combat work quite well together, and the amount of criticals that he seems to hit is amazing.

Have you tried re-forging any weapons yet, and messing around with the damage/critical settings on the weapons?

So much to do, so little time.  I'm going to sink a good few hours into this tonight!

I've just got started on it. Reading this thread – I have a heck of long way to go. I love JRPG's, well, correction, I love Final Fantasy. Never played a Fire Emblem before so I'm just getting used to the tiles and positioning the charcters around enemies. Good to know I have some Wing Men on here for support for when I inevitably get stuck.

I've only just gotten to Lon'qu. I did the competition mission by pairing characters up. No-one died, but the didn't seem to get xp as much as they do standing next to each other. The random encounters seem easier… I did one of those after and hardly got touched. Am I right in thinking that each weapon only has x amounts of usage?

Yeah, it seems that the weapons will break after a certain amount of use, unless it's something special like Chrom's Falchion.  Even the spell tomes have limited use.

You don't even seem to be able to 'forge' more uses into it at the blacksmith.

I'll be gutted when Lon'qu's 'Killing Edge' breaks.  It has a massive critical bonus on it.

Has anybody noticed if you get 'free' usage out of the weapon when being attacked?  I keep meaning to check but always forget in the heat of the battle.

I finally beat chapter five last night.  It seems so easy when you do it correctly.

I found out about the dodge, 'Ddg' and the avoid, 'Avo' bonuses that are applied when the relationships are good in adjacent squares, as they both seemed like they did the same thing.

Dodge only reduces the chance of critical hits, not the chance of actually being hit.  Avoid is the one that gives you more chance of not being hit at all!

I've just started chapter 5 this morning. I think you do get 'free' hits when your characters counter. I've just done the first battle and good old Fred cleaned up!! I did try forging one of the weapons to get more uses but it didn't work :-( I haven't paired characters up again, I just keep my healers way back and put trusty Fred up front to kick ass and chew gum…

Have to say, I'm loving this game… It's been a long while since I've sat at work thinking about what's going to happen next in a game and thinking about strategies etc. I definitely think it'll tide me over until FFX comes out for the Vita smile

Yep, it is a great game.  Didn't think I'd be into it as much as I am, but it's definitely got its hooks in.

I try not to use Fred too much.  I've been trying to give all the xp to the other members of my party, trying to bring them up to his level.  Just got Lissa up to level 10 and she learnt a new skill which increases her ability to heal.  I read somewhere about the ability to reclass when you get to level 10, but there has been no word on her being able to do it it as yet.

I did use Fred a lot on chapter 5 though, trying to rescue Maribelle and Ricken, which I eventually did.

I'm wondering if the healing classes will ever be able to wield a weapon, or offensive staff at later levels?

Cool. Was it a normal shop or one of Anna's travelling shops?  I'll have a look later and see if I can find it!

Downloaded all the available DLC maps last night which cost about £12.  Some of them give you more money, some more experience, although I played through the free one 'Champions of Yore 1' which wasn't too hard and gained a version of Prince Marth for my party.  He has no special weapon though. Don't know about the rest, but the one I played was set in 16 bit era. Especially the music. Loved it.

Then I tried 'Champions of Yore 2' and I got my ass handed to me.  They were so much more powerful than I am at the moment, so I went back to the story, and got my ass handed to me.  It's bloody hard! wink

Done some google-ing (is that even a word now!?) and it seems you can't fix weapons unless you get a wand that has a one-off use. Apparently most weapons can be bought during the game…

Cool.  I have seen some nice weapons available in the shop, but they're all so expensive.

As are the Master Seal, which means you can re-class/evolve the character, and the Second Seal, which I think means you can do it again.  Where is all this money supposed to be coming from?

I don't want to buy the Master Seal and find out that I've upgraded or re-classed incorrectly.

I guess I'll be finding out soon!

Got a few characters to level 10 now and they all gain a pretty good skill.

Virion ( I think his name is), the archer is now bloody awesome.  He's started to hit a few criticals, takes double shots occasionally and now has a bow which has a range of three squares.  He's been working with Sully for ages and they make quite a team! thumbs-up

After a few solid evening's playing, I think I'm getting somewhere.

Still got everyone alive, although only on chapter 8.

Sully and Virion are now married, as are Chrom and Sumia.

Not sure if the actual critical hit bonus goes up when they marry, but they certainly seem to hit more crits now.

As Lissa was at level 15, I decided to but my first Master Seal and see what happened to her.  I had two options, War Cleric, which added the ability to use axes, and Sage which granted her the ability to use spell tomes as her standard staff.

Went with Sage which gave her added magic bonuses and a new outfit and now she starts back at level 1.

I wanted to buy another Seal to use it on my avatar but the shop has gone!

Great game.

I wonder if we're playing the same game sometimes!? I'm on mission 9, just under 8 hours in and have done all side quests / random encounters that have popped up an no-one's getting married? I do all of the 'support' chats when they're available, and the barracks bit too. The only thing I'm not doing is putting two characters on one square very often… I think that wastes a move and xp. All of my regular characters are 10+ except Fred who's 8. I used a tome on Virion and he's now a sniper… Still only 2 blocks range though frown Which bow do you have him using? I have picked up another LonQu weapon (deathsword?) so it's good to know they're out there. I'm not sure how far from the end I am, but I'll be gutted if it's close!!

I don't think you're close to the end!

I did a little bit of grinding on the free downloadable map.  It's pretty easy with level 5+ characters, although I'm  trying to get Donnel up a few levels and it's really hard.  With the basic 'E' category lance that he has, he only does 2 damage to most enemies.  Trying to get an enemy down to 2HP is a nightmare, then he invariably misses the strike and dies! wink

I've got him up to 'D' cat lances now and he's well on his way as he could do slightly more damage.  He's supposed to be awesome when he uses the Master Seal.

I agree with not putting two characters on one square, although now Sully and Virion are married, I shared a tile in the last quest and it worked out well, although Virion didn't get much XP.

I think I read recently that if you pair someone with your own character, he gets double XP!

Virion a sniper?  Sounds cool.  What bonuses does that give him?  I found a 'Tower Bow', or something like that, which gives him a three square range, although he carries three bows with him at all time. thumbs-up

I paired most of the people up right at the start of the game, and every move I took had them fighting together.  Perhaps that's why I've had a couple of marriages?

Just had a look at how many chapters there are.

25 Standard Chapters

17 Side Stories (plus an extra 6 available via Spot Pass)

25 DLC Chapters

I've downloaded all of the content that's avaiable at the moment, but I've only been able to do the free one.  The rest are too hard! embarassed

That's him.  He's so weak to begin with, but can apparently work his way up to hero class or something.

The DLC ties into the world, but not the story so much.  Did try the Harvest Festival DLC which had those gay dudes, Victor and Vincent in it. My party seemed to want to talk to each other quite a lot in that mission and it all seemed to be same sex flirting.  Very funny.

I'm guessing the spot pass will work if you have that function turned on in the game, put the DS into sleep mode then pass someone who has done the same.  Easy in Japan, not so easy here!

I'm thinking that the overworld map will always have people to fight on it, even when you've finished!!

How did you get on with your promoting? 'M up to chapter 10 now and the battles are getting quite long now (30 minutes +). Chrom and Sully have gotten hitched (awwww) so I promoted Sully to a knight and she's pretty kickass now!! Virion and Freddy-boy make a great team, I'm not sure if I should be worried about those two and what they may be getting up to when no-one's looking? I have tended to keep my core team that I use for every battle… I guess that's because I turned perma-death off. I did try to bring Pegasus-Chick into the last battle but forgot I'd taken all of her weapons off her so she just hovered in a corner on her own. I tried giving her a lance and a sword but she didn't want to use them. Still absolutely loving this game!! Best portable game I've played I think.

Lol.

I've promoted myself to Grandmaster and Chrom to Lord I think.  Miriel has been promoted to a Dark Mage on horse back.  She's pretty cool.  No more weddings as yet, but I am having to pair up the weaker characters to the stronger ones.

I'm on chapter 11 and the weak ones don't stand a chance.  Backup keeps flooding in for the enemy as well.  I don't know how I'm going to beat it!

What did you think of chapter 9?  I was gutted.  I love the proper animated cutscenes you get sometimes.  I'd pay to watch a cartoon like that!

Checked my playtime yesterday and I'm just over forty hours for being 13 hours into the game!
