When a game soundtrack is up for nomination you will typically find it will come in one of two categories. It will either be a complementary soundtrack that evokes the specific emotions or environs in which it is featured, or it will bring a deeper level of experience to a title, that you would not find otherwise.
This years winner, without a shadow of a doubt, falls into the latter category. The Mafia series has long played to the traditional paradigms of the mobster trope, with Italian American gangsters finding brotherhood and respect among the backdrop of tradition and honor some of the central themes always touched upon within these sorts of games. 2016’s Mafia 3 moved away from these established traditions, by focusing the story on Sammy Robinson’s Black Mob and his adopted son Lincoln Clay’s fight for revenge on the dominant Italian mafia family of the Marcano syndicate.
Set in 1968, during the disastrous Vietnam War, the music of the early/late 60’s includes many artists and titles you will instantly recognise, alongside quite a few you may never have heard. Rock, Soul, Funk and Motown all feature heavily on what is an outstanding, and quite memorable list of music.
So sit back, relax and enjoy the soundtrack to Mafia III
