Having looked at the Most Anticipated game for 2016 and the high heavenly glow it, it’s now time for me to look back at the worst game of 2015 as voted by you – the community, it is…Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5! This was the tenth game in the series and a sort of reboot of it. As the last time we saw a game from young Tony was back in 2007, so hopes were high for the return of a much loved series. So where did it all go wrong?
The game launch on 29th September 2015 and was pretty much panned to death by most gaming site the likes of IGN gave it 3.5 out of 10 and Edge gave it 2 out of 10 so a long story short its “rubbish” to the point where it is the fourth worst PlayStation 4 game and fifth lowest Xbox one game on Metacritic. So all in all it’s a “do not touch” game. When I was asked to write this piece I was too scared to play it at the time, after hearing all the horror stories and seeing the vast number of Youtube videos of him falling through the map and the game generally imploding on itself, but in order to write a piece on this is the worst game of the year, I had to play it so I could give it an honest write up and see for myself if it is the worst game of 2015.
In all honesty. no it isn’t and why do I say that well time is a healer or more to the point in the gaming world a patch-up at the time of me playing this (8th January 2016) the game has been patched to within an inch of its life to the point where the disc holds 4.7gb of data but the patch you have to download to get the game going is a beefy 6.7gig that all most 1 and a half times the size of the original game file. Ok I believe there is some DLC in there but still the guys at Robomodo and Disruptive games really pulled the finger out to get the game running, though for many it was too little too late.
Now I know everyone wanted a blood bath here with me saying it was unplayable and it should be thrown on the burny burny fire, but I’m sorry yes it was a pile of poo at launch and yes it was rushed out the door and yes this is the way of the games industry right now and it’s totally the wrong way of doing things. But if you are going to thrust the knife into Tony Hawk’s 5, then surely we should change last year’s worst game of the game which was Watch_Dogs which was a perfectly serviceable title, dull as hell as it was to Assassin’s Unity which should be executed for the same crimes as Tony Hawk’s 5 in that it was unfinished, unpolished and not fit for the market.
If you’re looking for a back to the basics style Tony Hawk game that feels like the good old days of 2 and 3. Then 5 does have some of that feeling with it open world skate park levels and the classic gameplay like multiple object collecting. For example, SKATE and DVD covers hidden in the levels along with a set amount missions which will see you doing things like trying to empty a pool full of huge beach balls and having to keep a combo going, to stop your head from exploding which is good fun to name a few if the mission types (yes I said fun in a review of Tony Hawks 5 best get the blindfold and shot me out the back). Add to that a soundtrack made up from punk / hip hop and you have yourself a not bad little game. And yes there are a few rough edges you do clip a little bit, when you fall off but for me looking back from where it was, to where it is – I can see by these minor issues, plus you can get it for just under £17 because everyone hates it except me I guess.
So Tony Hawk’s 5 voted worst game of 2015 by the community and yes for a time I believed it was the worst game of the year but as with the way of games these days, with a few patches…well one HUGE ass patch to be fair. A game can go from “unplayable” to “aye it’s alright” I guess.
And I guess no one played Afro Samurai 2 then?
