Roller Disco

January 18th, 2010 by

Early 1997 and Lara Croft has my palms damp with exhilaration. This was edge of the seat stuff and even though I knew the furthest I could fall was a couple of feet on my arse off the sofa, the dev team at Eidos had managed to induce a sense of vertigo that had been rarely experienced before on a console. She had me wrapped around her little finger and I knew it…what’s more, my girlfriend at the time knew it too. Nothing was going to tear me away from the adventures I was having with my new found female friend on the cathode ray tube.A wolf whistle from the bedroom caught my attention, which was followed by a toned, tanned, slender leg beckoning me…”Just let me finish this last level babe…and I’ll…come…to bed”Our interruption was over. Lara and I continued to climb the heady heights of the tower in search of the elusive treasure. A while later, we were interrupted once more.

But this time, my girlfriend meant business.

Roller skating naked around the living room, in front of the TV and OVER the controller cable, she was keen to show me that there was more on offer in the real world than in the 32-bit virtual one….but with the checkpoint some way off, I had to keep my thumbs on the d-pad and get Lara to safety…I wasn’t about to let her fall and become a rag doll. By then, it was too late…my girlfriend had given up hope and was fast asleep…dreaming of a better man no doubt.

It was one of a series of moments in my life that have defined me as someone who enjoys video games and I hope I always will – in what ever format. Sometime later I married that Roller Skating Naked Chick…and she hasn’t tried that again.
